Top 5: Best Portable and Energy Efficient Air Conditioning Units

With the UK experiencing a massive heatwave at the moment, with temperatures over 35 degrees in London, it's important to keep cool and comfortable. A lot of houses suffer in the heat due to the lack of airconditioning or air flow. Perhaps you live in a flat with small windows, or in a city with no wind. If so, your home can quickly become uncomfortable - making even the simplest of tasks impossible (eg sleeping, working, cleaning)

Our remedy: portable aircon units. Specifically, exhaust air con units. Portable Air Conditioners (PACS) are measured in BTU's. The higher the BTU, the bigger the room that can be cooled. The only other thing to take into consideration is decibel levels (ie how loud the product is).

1) De'Longhi PACN82

De'Longhi is a fantastic Italian brand that knows about electronics. Therefore, their Pinguino PACN82 Air conditioning unit is amazing. This unit uses R290 propane gas, which is a natural refrigerant gas that has excellent thermodynamic capabilities, also known as really cold! This machine is capable of cooling most big rooms down in minutes! This machine has a 3 speed fan setting, which on the maximum speed only produces 52 decibels (which if you don't know, that's very quiet!) and is rated energy efficiency class A. Overall, an easy to set up and well built machine!

Specifications:

  • Energy Efficiency Class A

  • BTU: 9400

  • R290 Gas

  • 3 Fan Speeds

  • 52 Decibels

2) De'Longhi PACEX120 Silent

This machine is by far the most powerful and best designed air conditioning unit we have ever come across. Firstly, it's rare to come across black. Secondly, this product has a lovely shape to it with inbuilt LED screen. Thirdly, it boosts a massive 12,000 BTU whilst still being 49-53 decibels. Overall, this is an amazing beast of a machine which will help keep you and your whole house cool during sweltering weather. With this machine, you pay for what you get. Well worth the money in our honest opinion!

Specifications:

  • Energy Efficiency Class A

  • BTU: 12000

  • R290 Gas

  • 3 Fan Speeds

  • 49-52 decibels

3) Pro Breeze 4 in 1

This machine from Pro Breeze is Amazon's choice, and rightly so. This machine is very capable of cooling down any room to 16 degrees. This machine has 4 modes: air cooling, dehumidifying, fan only and sleep mode. This machine is similar to others, such as the remote control, energy efficiency of A and using R290 gas, but it comes with a modern and sleek design. We personally loved the LED Display, which made the product really intuitive and easy to use.

Specifications:

  • Energy Efficiency Class A

  • BTU: 9000

  • R290 Gas

  • 2 Fan Speeds

  • 65 Decibels

4) Princess Mobile Air Conditioner

For those wanting to save money or perhaps on a small budget, or even a small house sometimes you don't need or want the biggest most powerful air conditioning unit. As a result, a slightly cheaper option is the princess Mobile Air Conditioner. This machine is less effective than others since it has a smaller cooling capacity, a higher decibel level, and uses water and not gas. However, this doesn't mean it isn't a good purchase! We found this machine still cooled down our kitchen, and had all the relevant attachments, LED screen, and functionality.

Specifications:

  • Energy Efficiency Class A

  • BTU: 7000

  • Water refrigeration

  • 2 Fan Speeds

  • 65 Decibels

Buy Now: £296.66

5) Olimpa Splendid Dolceclima

For those that want a compact air conditioning unit, this is perfect for you! Perhaps you have a flat, or want it for a small office? This machine is effective whilst being small. The cooling capacity excellent due to the R290 gas and really easy to use. The machine is also Energy class A, so wont impact your electricity bill much! Overall, a cute but compelling machine. Olimpa Splendid also sell more powerful versions if you do require something bigger.

Specifications:

  • Energy Efficiency Class A

  • BTU: 8000

  • R290 Gas

  • 2 Fan Speeds

  • 63 Decibels

Our Verdict

Overall, we would strongly suggest having an air conditioning unit regardless. The UK can occasionally reach crazy temperatures, and it's only going to increase each year as global warming continues (seriously!). Keeping cool is so important for everyone, even pets. The product you buy will basically depend on your house size. If you live in a big house or have big open plan rooms, then we'd strongly suggest one of the De'Longhi products. If perhaps you live in a flat, then one of the small options may be ideal. If you're not interested in aircon, perhaps a fan will suffice.
